Veïns de Parcent - Newsletter Nº 55 - 17th May 2007

Dear friends,

Veïns win an award
Last Saturday, Joan Carles and I attended an Els Verds Esquerra Unida rally in Dénia, at which Veïns de Parcent received a IV Saba Nova award for our Civic Initiative in protecting the environment. The trophy is at Jacqui's house, if you want to see it.

Election, 27th May
Your CDP manifesto will be delivered to you in the next couple of days, and no doubt the PP will also be sending theirs out now. Both parties will be canvassing the residents, though Mari Carmen has apparently said that she will not be going to the Barranquet area "because the residents there are too politicised." No comment!

There was a good turn out at the CDP's two meetings, on Saturday last for the residents and on Monday for the Valencian presentation. It was good to have representatives from all the political parties (except PP) at the latter meeting, and they all gave us their un-stinted support and congratulated us on our campaign to stop our part of the valley being destroyed.

This afternoon (Wednesday) there is a meeting for the Dutch residents at 4 p.m. for them to meet some of the CDP candidates and give them an opportunity to ask questions.

On the last Friday of the campaign, 25th May, the CDP will be holding a meeting in the Club de Convivencia, starting at 8 p.m. It will be an informal gathering, with a chance to talk to your candidates and join them in an enjoyable evening with tapas and drinks provided. Please come along and bring your friends!

Veïns arrange a public debate
Veïns de Parcent invited the three English PP candidates to take part in a debate with the English CDP candidates on Tuesday, 22nd May at the Piscina Bar, starting at 8 p.m. Unfortunately the PP candidates have declined, feeling that it would be too confrontational. However, we feel that, now that the different viewpoints being put over by the two parties are known, it will still be worthwhile to discuss these and elucidate on any points that you are not clear about. So we look forward to seeing you next Tuesday.

Homes & Gardens Exhibition
If you are fed up with the election, why not join a coach trip to the Homes & Gardens Exhibition in Alicante on Saturday, 26th May, leaving from Benissa at 9.45 a.m. from the car park by the schools at the bottom of Benissa (near Mercadona). Price only 15 euros including entrance. Lots to do and see there. Refreshments available on site (no bars or restaurants within walking distance, so you may prefer to bring your own). Ring Jenny Bussey (96 640 5365) to book your seats. [This is a Gardeners' Circle trip, but everyone is welcome to join us.]

Terras de L'Horta
The Levante newspaper yesterday reported that Julio Iglesias has sold all his shares in building projects in the province of Alicante to Ballester, including a 45% share in Terras de L'Horta. You can read the article here (Spanish). I seem to remember being told that he had no connection with this firm. Can we believe anything that we are told by those who want to ruin our village?

I look forward to seeing you at the meetings above and, of course, on Election Day!

Jenny
